Safety

Meeting people from the internet, even from Brown.

Meeting someone the first time

Somewhere public, on campus or near it. Tell a friend where you are going and when. Get yourself there and back. Nobody worth meeting will mind any of that.

Before you meet

Talk here first for as long as you want. There is no clock on a conversation and no penalty for taking your time. If someone pushes to move to another app straight away, that is worth noticing.

Blocking

Blocking is immediate, permanent, and silent. The conversation ends for both of you, you will never be shown to each other again, and the other person is told nothing. You do not need a reason and you do not have to report anyone to block them.

Reporting

Report from a card or from a conversation. Tell us what happened. We read reported conversations, and only reported conversations. We answer within a day.

If someone is in danger, that is a matter for the people below, not for us.

On campus

Brown’s Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management takes emergencies at (401) 863-4111 and non-emergencies at (401) 863-3322. In an emergency off campus, call 911.

Outside business hours, that same non-emergency number reaches the Administrator on Call. Ask for them by name when something cannot wait until the morning but is not an emergency.

Counseling and Psychological Services and the Title IX and Gender Equity Office are the people to talk to about anything that happened to you, whether or not it started here. Their current contact details are on Brown’s website.
